1Certificate Credit

Within the school curriculum courses system, complying with the curriculum mapping structure, it sets 20 credits class for certification, and develops woodcarving, colored painting, Jiao-zhi Pottery and Chien-Nien certificates as objectives to establish cognition and standards that the cultural heritage professionals should have. Furthermore, it makes the students know the future development orientation and direction clearly. 

2Future Prospect

(1)Teaching and Research

   The aim of Department of Traditional Crafts is on restoration of ancient monuments. Thus, teaching content focuses on the collection and organization for documents and passing the proper artistry in order to cultivate comprehensive specialists on restoration of ancient monuments.

Besides large wood, for traditional architecture, it is decorated with materials made by stone craving, wood craving, Jiao –Zhi pottery, clay sculpture, colored drawing, etc. The different sculpture categories are based on various materials. Regardless the nature, the decoration is always high embossment on the architecture. Therefore, the future teaching will pay highly attention on proper traditional sculpture skill; also establish detailed explanation between documents/sketch and skills.

During the early days, national artist, Mr. Gui-Li Huang was in charge lecture of tradition, and on his built strong foundation, all teachers and students were long-term involved in research and practical creation experiences. Our university has established long-term teaching experiences, We expect to have wonderful results in the future development of restoration of ancient monuments, related expanded skills in Jiao –Zhi pottery, clay sculpture and cut and clay and so on.

(2)Advance Service

After completion of the Day-term Department, we will officially plan and apply to establish the Advance and Extension Division in order to build the nighttime teaching system. Currently we are proceeding in two main directions. One is the re-training of staffs. We offer the guidance and theory in academic and cultural background to the artist in the related field. The other is the establishment in Research Class of Characteristics. We will have some short-term programs for artistry and practical teaching, offering a channel for the general public who is interested in understanding folk art.

(3)Cooperation of Practice and Teaching

The cooperation plan for practice and teaching in our department lies on combination of document arrangement and practical involvement. Practical course in junior year will be replaced by visiting teaching. As for the senior year students, they have to plan the graduation special subject, and research, collect and publish their work, according to their scheduled progress. In addition, they have to offer their scheme beforehand to apply funds, then point out key points and fulfill the record step by step. As to practical method for restoration ancient monuments, make initiative contact for the decided restoration plan, endeavor practical experiences for senior students. During the practice period, teachers will be sent to get involved to guide students and trade experiences with civil artisans in order to really combine the practice and teaching. When the number of graduates achieve in certain level of involvement of construction and quality, the restoration team will be formed and participate actively in the restoration of specific subjects and ancient monuments. From the involvement of teaching, elevate to professional one, and then finally achieve the aim of the department.

(4)Cooperation with other institutions

In Taiwan, other institutions with this related special subject are: Graduate School of Traditional Craft in Guan Du Art school, Graduate School of Traditional Architecture in Tai Nan Art school, Graduate School of Ancient Monument Restoration in Yun Lin Technology University, etc. They all have different nature of specialty and are high level of research essence. Establishment of our department is different from the aforementioned three schools, we focus on practical working process on the base of traditional lectures, also, build various structures in different level from the root of teaching, in order to get students involved step by step with the distribution route of folk art. When the specialized knowledge of allusion, pithy formula, style, artistry and drawing achieve at certain level, the department will hold regular seminars to exchange research results. On the base of information exchanging, we hope to understand more thoroughly the regional characteristics in Taiwan and the foundation of restoration is more abundant.

(5)International Cooperation

Achievements in folk art in Taiwan are very fruitful, especially in reserving the carving (in stone and wood), sculpture (clay sculpture, Jiao –Zhi) and drawing in traditional architecture. It is one of the important cultural assets worth to be recorded. We can even go a step forward to promote each artwork individually in related cooperation. We can not only send the research results and report to relative organizations but also can focus on certain special issues to exchange information with the contact cooperative.
